This is one of the few daily street markets in Portugal. It mainly features stalls selling fresh produce, such as fruits and vegetables. The name says it all: Fruit Square. A visit to this market is a must if you’re spending a day in Lisbon. It’s an indoor market located near Cais do Sodré. While it used to sell fresh vegetables, fruits, and other products, it has now transformed into a food hall. The concept is that many of Lisbon’s top chefs have a small Tascinha (tapas stall) in the market where they serve petiscos—small versions of the signature dishes from their restaurants. You can order your dish and take a seat at one of the large communal tables in the center.
The market is open daily from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Another great market in Lisbon is the flea market in the Alfama district. Here, you can find vintage items, antiques, books, clothing, and much more. The market has a relaxed atmosphere and is perfect for hunting unique souvenirs. Feira da Ladra takes place at Campo de Santa Clara, near the impressive Panteão Nacional and the famous Igreja de São Vicente de Fora.
The market is open on Tuesdays from 9:00 AM to around 6:00 PM, and on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to around 6:00 PM.
This market is a bit out of the ordinary but definitely worth mentioning. This annual event, taking place from July 18 to 28 in 2024, offers a unique experience where you feel transported back to the medieval times. Do keep in mind that you will need an admission ticket for this market.
It takes place on the second Saturday of every month.
This large indoor market is located near Ponta Nova. It offers a variety of fresh products as well as other items such as flowers and clothing. A little further along, you’ll find a section of the market with useful kitchen products, baskets, and other traditional items.
It is open daily in the morning. On Fridays, the market features an expanded selection of clothing and other miscellaneous items.
Located in the heart of Coimbra, this market is the perfect place to buy fresh products such as vegetables, fruits, fish, and meat. The atmosphere of Mercado de Abrantes is typical of a regional Portuguese market: lively, friendly, and welcoming. The locals come here not only to do their daily shopping but also to catch up and maintain social connections. It’s a place where visitors can experience local culture and traditions, and where they are greeted by friendly market vendors.
The market has an authentic, non-touristy character, making it a great spot to get a glimpse of daily life in a city like Abrantes. It’s also an excellent place to connect with locals and learn more about the region’s culinary traditions.
