What to do in Fatima
Highlights Fatima
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima
The main attraction in Fátima is the "Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima", a religious site marking the place where, according to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. The sanctuary includes the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity. The complex also features an impressive open-air space for religious celebrations and processions.
Via Sacra (Stations of the Cross) and Valinhos
This is a beautiful walk along the 14 Stations of the Cross, ending at Valinhos, the place where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to the children after their release from prison. The path also passes by the house of Lúcia, one of the shepherd children.
Pilgrims
As you approach Fátima, one of the first things you'll notice is the large groups of pilgrims coming from all over the world, on foot or by bus, to express their faith and take part in religious ceremonies. These include candlelight processions and the annual commemorations of the Marian apparitions. The most important dates for pilgrims are May 13 (the first apparition) and October 13 (the final apparition and the Miracle of the Sun). Visitors can also see the Cova da Iria, the actual site of the apparitions, which houses the Chapel of the Apparitions (Capela das Aparições) — a simple yet powerful place of worship.
Strolling through the streets
It’s also delightful to wander through the streets of Fátima, which are lined with many shops and restaurants — especially religious stores. In the center of Fátima, there's also a small market where rosary enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy.
Museum of the Sanctuary of Fátima
For those interested in the history of Fátima, the Museum of the Sanctuary of Fátima offers a wealth of information about the apparitions and the city's religious significance. Visitors can explore religious artwork, historical documents, and artifacts related to the events and the faith. Fátima is a city steeped in spirituality and history, attracting both believers and curious travelers. Whether you’re seeking religious experiences, cultural insights, or a moment of reflection, Fátima offers a unique and memorable journey.
Night Processions
On significant dates, especially the 12th and 13th of each month from May to October, night processions with candles and prayers are held. These are deeply moving events and truly special to witness.
