The start of our third camping season

Storm, the vegetable garden and a new house in Tomar

It is now early April and the camping site has been open again for over a month. At the end of the season we are always in need of some rest, but as winter progresses we notice that we start to look forward to the new season again.

Our last winter was full of ups and downs, which we would like to look back on with you.

But first: Holiday!

On 31 October we closed the camping for the season and packed our bags for a well-deserved holiday with the whole family. As Yves is only required to start compulsory education from the age of six, we had the opportunity to truly get away for a few weeks. What a privilege it was to spend that time together.

When we returned home, Yvonne was already waiting for us. She stayed in our studio over the winter, which immediately brought a sense of warmth and liveliness back to the place.

We celebrated the festive season in a Portuguese way, together with friends. A large turkey was prepared, and we enjoyed it for several days afterwards.

Winter chores and the vegetable garden

After Christmas, we slowly started tackling the jobs that had been on our list for quite some time. Here and there, the grounds received a fresh coat of paint, in the sanitary building we installed new rainfall showers, and we also carried out a lot of garden maintenance.

In addition, we finally started our vegetable garden — a long-held wish that has now become reality. We chose a no-dig garden with raised beds. By disturbing the soil as little as possible and adding new layers each year, we let nature do most of the work.

Everything is now growing beautifully, and we enjoy the results every day. Fresh lettuce, crunchy radishes, and kale that is ready to be harvested — it remains special to be able to pick it straight from our own garden.

And then came the shock of our lives: Storm Kristin

In the early morning of 28 January, around five o’clock, we were woken by a severe storm (with wind speeds exceeding 230 km/h). When we walked around the site later that morning, we could hardly believe what we were seeing. Roof tiles were scattered everywhere, the sanitary building had largely lost its roof, fences had been blown over, the chicken coop was damaged, and trees had fallen in several places. The damage seemed endless.

The following days were entirely focused on repairing and improvising. We were without electricity for ten days, had no mobile reception for several days, and the internet was also down — it is expected to be restored by the end of this month.

Still, we immediately got to work. With the help of others, for which we are deeply grateful, we rebuilt everything step by step. It was an intense period, but we managed to have everything ready again before the camping reopened.

We simply cannot sit still.

This year we have added a special new chapter: we purchased a property in the centre of Tomar for holiday rentals. Fortunately, the house was already in excellent condition, so there was little major renovation required. Of course, we have made it entirely our own, with a fresh coat of paint and a complete interior design. A process we have thoroughly enjoyed.

We are now proud owners of Pied-à-Terre in Tomar: a luxurious holiday home with a surprisingly large inner garden, right in the heart of the city. A place where everything comes together — peace, space, and the vibrant Portuguese city life within walking distance.

And now?

We are currently enjoying a new season and the weather has been wonderful. The first guests have already found their way back to us, and reservations for the summer period are coming in steadily. The site looks beautiful, with spring in full bloom, giving everything a fresh and vibrant atmosphere.

Once again this year, we are organising a variety of activities for our guests. The first shared dinner is already planned, and through our yoga programme we will continue to create inspiring moments. One of the upcoming highlights is the first sound bath session — an opportunity for deep relaxation and stillness.

We are looking forward to everything this season will bring and hope to welcome many of you again.

With love,
Emile, Sanne & Yves
