The History of Tomar and the Templars
The Order of the Templars, a mysterious and legendary order, has deep roots in Portugal. In the early 12th century, during the time of the Reconquista, the order was founded with the goal of protecting the holy sites in Jerusalem and defending Christianity. However, the Templars didn’t come solely to guard sacred ground—they played a key role in the rise of the Portuguese state.
In 1128, when Portugal was still a young kingdom, the Templars were granted the estate of Tomar as a reward for their military support against the Moors. Here, they built one of their most important and iconic castles: the Convent of Christ. Today, the castle is not only a breathtaking landmark but also a powerful symbol of the Templars’ influence on the region.
The importance of the Templars in Portugal went beyond military power. The order was granted vast tracts of land and became a dominant economic force. They were also heavily involved in trade and finance, which brought them considerable wealth and influence. But like many great powers, the Templars eventually faced a dramatic downfall. In the early 14th century, the order was dissolved in Portugal, and their assets were transferred to the Order of Christ—an order that would later play a crucial role in Portugal’s Age of Discovery.

Where Are the Templars in Portugal?

Castelo de Almourol: Located on a small island in the Tagus River, this medieval castle is one of the most beautiful in Portugal and has strong ties to the Templars. It served as an important defensive outpost and was a strategic location for the Templars in their battles against the Moors.
Convento de São João Baptista in Belmonte: Though less well-known, this monastery also has a strong connection to the Templars. It was originally founded by the order and later taken over by the Order of Christ, which inherited many Templar properties after their dissolution in the 14th century.
Castelo de Sortelha: This ancient castle in northern Portugal features notable Templar influences in its architecture, though much of its history remains shrouded in mystery.

Both the church and the cross serve as distinctive symbols of the Knights Templar. The church appears on the order’s seal, while the cross holds a prominent place on their garments. The red color of the cross represents not only the blood shed by Jesus but also the blood the knights are willing to spill for their Lord. The white mantle on which the cross is displayed symbolizes the light and the new world they embrace upon entering the order, as well as the dark world they leave behind. According to the pope, the cross, as a living symbol, is a sign of redemption and the pure life that the knights commit to uphold.

Although the original Order of the Knights Templar was officially dissolved, there are still groups today that present themselves as modern-day “Templars.” However, these groups are not direct continuations of the medieval order. Instead, they are often symbolic or spiritual organizations focused on philanthropy, mysticism, or preserving the legacy and legend of the Templars.
Modern Templar Organizations
There are numerous organizations that call themselves “Templars.” Some claim to carry on the heritage of the original order, but no official body recognizes them as true descendants of the medieval Knights Templar. These modern-day Templar groups often hold rituals and ceremonial gatherings inspired by ancient traditions, but their focus tends to be on symbolic and spiritual values such as brotherhood, honor, and service to others.

Explore the Convento de Cristo
You simply can’t visit Tomar without discovering the iconic Convento de Cristo. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is not only one of the finest examples of Templar architecture, but it also holds centuries of history within its walls. Stroll through medieval cloisters, admire the stunning round church, and feel the mystique the Templars left behind. It’s a place that offers a literal and figurative window into the past.

Driving and Parking in Tomar with a Camper
Tomar is quite accessible by camper, but parking can be a bit of a challenge.
While most of Tomar’s main roads are wide and easy to navigate, it’s important to avoid turning into narrow side streets—you might end up in a tight spot that’s difficult to get out of. Stick to the main roads as much as possible and you’ll be just fine.
Here are a few helpful tips on where you can park your camper:

🚐 At the Market Hall – Right in the middle of Tomar, there’s a parking area next to the market hall that’s suitable for campers.
